Eagle Scout Projects Completed at Willow Waterhole Park

Christian Lopez and Joseph Lupski, both from Scout Troop1266 based at Saint Thomas Episcopal School, completed their Eagle Scout projects at the Willow Waterhole Park in August.

Joseph designed and installed mileage markers on the Westbury Lake south trail.  The two mile loop has scenic overviews starting at the gazebo and along the elevated berm parallel to Highway 90.  The green markers are placed at 1/4 mile intervals.  This trail is used by many walkers, joggers, and for area school cross country meets.  Joseph remarked "I am glad to have worked on a project that impacts the community in such a positive way”.

Christian installed five birdhouses at three different sites.  He put in Purple Martin and Barn Owl houses at Westbury Lake, Screech Owl and a Chickadee houses along the Bayou Trail near The Gathering Place, and a Wood Duck house across from the Levitt Pavilion site.   Christian worked with the Audubon Society to choose the types of houses and the sites.   He will be attending the next Society meeting at the Park on September 19th at 8:00 to point out the new additions to members.  Christian said "I was happy to be a part of the growth of the Willow Waterhole, and hope this project will encourage others to continue expanding the park for the benefit of our community.”

The Scouts presented their project proposals for approval by the Willow Waterhole Greenspace Conservancy, the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department, and Scout Leadership.  They prepared budgets, conducted fundraising, purchased materials, and organized workdays to complete the projects.   Ralph Rieger, President of the WWGC, stated “I would like to thank Christian and Joseph for all their hard work and invite the community to visit Willow Waterhole Park to view these great new amenities”.
